At the Horn of Africa Youth Network (HoAYN), we recognize that climate resilience and peacebuilding must go hand in hand. Our work focuses on empowering youth and communities to develop sustainable adaptation strategies that reduce resource-based conflicts. By promoting inclusive dialogue, shared resource management, and climate-smart livelihoods, HoAYN helps transform potential sources of conflict into opportunities for cooperation and collective action.
At the Horn of Africa Youth Network (HoAYN), our Climate, Peace & Security (CPS) approach recognizes that climate change is not only an environmental issue but also a key driver of social and political instability in the region. In the Horn of Africa, prolonged droughts, floods, and resource scarcity often exacerbate tensions between communities and threaten livelihoods, particularly for young people and women who rely on natural resources for survival.
We work to reduce these risks by promoting conflict-sensitive adaptation strategies that foster collaboration and equity. Through initiatives such as joint water resource governance, inclusive land-use planning, and community-led conservation, HoAYN empowers youth and local actors to lead in building climate resilience and peace at the grassroots level.
To strengthen community stability and economic security, we support climate-smart livelihoods like regenerative agriculture, eco-entrepreneurship, and green innovation. These interventions create sustainable income opportunities while reducing environmental degradation and competition over scarce resources, transforming youth from victims of climate stress into champions of sustainable development and peace.
HoAYN also works closely with local governments, IGAD, the African Union, and civil society partners to integrate climate-security approaches into policy frameworks. We believe that peace and climate resilience are two sides of the same coin and that by uniting communities around shared resources and shared hope, we can build a more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable Horn of Africa.
“In the course of history, there comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness… that time is now.”
