Gender Equality

Building a Safer and More Equal Future for Girls and Women

Empowering girls and women lies at the heart of HoAYN’s mission to build inclusive, just, and peaceful societies across the Horn of Africa. We recognize that gender equality is not just a fundamental human right, it is also a powerful catalyst for social stability, sustainable development, and economic growth. Women and girls form the backbone of our communities, yet too often they face systemic barriers, discrimination, and violence that limit their potential. HoAYN is committed to transforming this reality by creating safe spaces, amplifying voices, and driving policies that uphold the dignity and rights of every girl and woman.

Advancing Gender Equality and Ending Violence

HoAYN’s Commitment to Women and Girls’ Empowerment

Through our Elimination of Violence against Women & Girls initiatives, we work to dismantle the cultural, legal, and institutional barriers that perpetuate gender-based violence. Our advocacy focuses on ensuring the effective implementation of key national and regional laws such as the Sexual Offences Act, Anti-FGM Act, and Protection Against Domestic Violence Act. We also lead and participate in campaigns like the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, using platforms such as the Sisters’ Keeper Initiative to mobilize communities, educate the public, and hold institutions accountable for protecting women and girls.

Our commitment extends beyond advocacy to building regional movements that champion the rights of girls and young women. Through the She Leads Africa Regional Programme, HoAYN supports the emergence of a strong network of young women activists who are shaping policies and influencing decisions within the African Union (AU) and East African Community (EAC). This initiative amplifies girls’ and women’s voices in governance, ensuring that they are not just beneficiaries of development but central agents of change. By linking local action in countries like Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Mali to regional decision-making spaces, She Leads fosters a dynamic and unified movement for gender equality.

At the core of this work is the She Leads Girls and Young Women (GYW) Network, which brings together diverse young women leaders to collaborate, learn, and advocate for their collective rights. HoAYN nurtures this network by providing mentorship, capacity building, and opportunities for leadership in regional dialogues and civic engagement. We envision a Horn of Africa where every girl grows up free from fear, where her choices are respected, and where she can lead with confidence and purpose. Empowering girls and women is not just a goal, it is the foundation upon which lasting peace, inclusive governance, and sustainable development are built.

“Gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance.”

~ Kofi Annan ~
